398: Liz Hanks, Ibuken Sunday + Petra Haller

  • St John's, Leytonstone 825 High Road Leytonstone London, E11 1HH United Kingdom (map)

An afternoon where sound, space and rhythmic storytelling combine to create music that resonates in your body and your mind. Each performance brings a fresh twist and spark to the idea of music making – escapism through field recording, meditative layered digital drones or improvised dancing rhythms as feet and piano hammers combine.

Liz Hanks is a cellist and composer based in Sheffield whose work spans contemporary, folk, and experimental music. Drawing on influences including minimalism, Indian classical music and improvisation, her practice is rooted in place, often exploring the relationship between music and the natural world.

Her debut solo album ‘Land’, released on Hudson Records, uses cello and field recordings to reflect on the changing natural landscape of her Sheffield neighbourhood. Inspired by local and natural history, the album explores themes of urban nature, lost green spaces, and the quiet presence of the natural world in built environments.

Ibukun Sunday is a Lagos based composer and violist who has expertly positioned himself between the rarely-married cultures of ambient music and West African musics. He entwines his compositions with field recordings and also experimental on ambient music and improvisation from his native Nigeria and deeply considered philosophies of existence, humanity and apocalypse.

Ibukun continually seeking and creating an atmosphere where his skills and potentials will be maximally utilized, improving the quality of lives and positively influencing the productivity of his audience.
