354: Angharad, Loucin + China Bowls

‘We all moved in together pre-covid in November 2019. As a house of five musicians, over lockdown we were still able to play together each week. We were a full band – Drums, Sax, Bass, Guitar and Vocals (our poor neighbours!). With five of us living there, you’d always find a writing session happening in a bedroom, a DIY recording in the lounge, or a band meeting in the kitchen. We even converted our lounge into a makeshift studio over one of the lockdowns! We’ve sadly said goodbye to some original members of our home but welcomed new musicians in, and have supported each other through it all and grown closer musically because of this. So many new projects and new compositions were borne out of us being stuck in the house together and we can’t wait to share them with you at this gig’Beth Hopkins (Angharad)

Angharad brings her honest lyricism to Daylight Music this Winter. If the Welsh are known to have music in their blood and poetry in their soul, Angharad has it by the bucketload. Angharad’s authentic and raw lyrics are beautifully matched with poignant and captivating melodies. Her performance lulls you into a dreamy, woozy sweet space of lush vocals and saxophone. Angharad is the newest project from Beth Hopkins who also leads the band Queen Colobus; a genre-bending 4-piece tearing up the London Jazz Scene. Beth’s compositions have received support from BBC Radio 1, Mary Anne Hobbs with 6Music, Robert Elms on BBC Radio London, Women in Jazz, CLASH, LOUD Women & more. queencolobus.bandcamp.com/music

Loucin is a London based vocalist and songwriter with her influences rooted in jazz, neo-soul and RnB. As part of several projects including lead vocalist for Tomorrow’s Warriors Female Frontline, backing vocalist for Poppy Adjuda and as part of The ‘Living’ Choir, for Cherise Adams-Burnett’s EP. Loucin was able to express her love for jazz and swing when vocalist for Leeds University Union Big Band for three years. Taken aback by the crowd’s hushed reaction at her first public performance at the age of 14, Loucin realised her voice could command an audience’s attention. Her original project has been a way for her to connect with her audiences and reflect on issues like marginalisation, identity and oppression. instagram.com/loucinmusic/
